We would all love to avoid cargo damage but it’s safe to say that every shipper will suffer it at some point. Meaning you will need to claim, but unfortunately the carriers are often in the driving seat when it comes to a payout so let’s look at how we can reduce the chances of a denied claim.
- Fill out and keep all your paperwork and prove that your shipment was in good condition prior to loading by photo evidence
- Fill out correctly the BOL with goods description and classification, weight and item amounts and be accurate
- Paperwork showing the value of your product is key when working out a payout
- Present everything to the carrier as soon as possible but make the carrier aware of your intent to claim within 3 days
- Make sure that you don’t owe the shipper any money for past or present shipments because you will surely be denied
Even if you win your claim, the carrier will do everything to reduce the amount they need to pay you, so you must have proof that you have tried to mitigate your losses.
- Did you try and salvage anything
- Could you repair anything
- Did you sell anything at a discount
- Do not dispose of anything as the shipper may want to inspect
- If a material is hazardous and needs to be disposed of, notify the carrier immediately of your intention
Ship smart and before any cargo claim, make sure you have your ducks in a row!
