Cargo theft in transit is at spike during and after pandemic

Theft of cargo in transit remains highest among all types of cargo theft in 2020. This is one of the trends identified in the annual cargo theft report released by TT Club and BSI recently.

Before pandemic the spike of cargo theft from the containers was around holiday season and mainly for selected commodities: parfurmery, cosmetics, electronics, food stuff. Pandemic indeed, propelled the number of the cargo thefts. Among Recoupex clients we’ve noticed an increase of truck – container hijacking cases during inland transportation to and from the port.

Regardless of GPS and tracking devices robbers have found ways to tweak the system, where truck drivers are often involved in criminal activity and are aware of the cargo nature inside the container. Final mile delivery is generally considered the period of most significant risk in the context of cargo theft.
