Most of us love what we do or we wouldn’t do it, but do you sometimes burn yourself out?
I love working in the maritime industry and especially in cargo claims, and I believe that the key to not burning out is being passionate about what you do and learning something new every day from clients both old and new. I think every day is a school day.
Do I want to see those I work with and admire, burn themselves out?
No. I want to see them successful and healthy in mind and body and the key to this is to love what you do and enjoy the people you meet and work with along the way.
We all need to put the time into our business, especially if it is a new venture, and this often means being available on the end of the phone 24/7 because in our business, the call could come from anywhere in the world and being alert means you are always focused being able to give any potential client 100% your best, meaning they get great customer service!
It is easy to be disproportionately passionate about our work, but it is who we are, and everyone in the maritime and shipping industry helps the world keep ticking, making sure that day-to-day life across the world proceeds as normal, and many people overlook just how much work, skill, time, management and knowledge goes into what is in effect, ‘normality.’
Ports, ships, logistics, transport staff, drivers, crane operators, engineers, vessel operators, harbour masters, boat builders and designers, carriers, exporters, importers, freight forwarders, shipping coordinators, trade & shipping planners, lawyers, insurers, claim handlers and claim experts. This list goes on…
Being a part of such an important chain gives me that extra energy, knowing that we all work in conjunction and are huge chain often overlooked but so very important. We are at the centre of world trade and help feed and cloth people across the world as well as make sure medical supplies arrive on time saving lives.
This is enough to keep me working hard and never burn out, being a part of such an important global chain and working with such incredible people helping exporters and freight forwards recoup any losses, helping keep them in business and see them grow!
