Photographic evidence is one of the first necessities when making a cargo claim.
You just pick the smartphone and take some photos! No paid apps, no software extensions, and in most cases, not even Expert Surveyor is needed.
Here is a cheat sheet on how to take damaged cargo and damaged container pictures :
- Photograph the outside of the container clearing showing the container number on the side panel and door.
- Photograph all damage to the container: holes, dents, damaged door gaskets, extreme rust, and visible water lines on the exterior of the container due to submersion.
- Photographic evidence of damage should be taken from both outside and inside the container.
- In order to prove that shipper properly packed the container take a photo of the cargo as soon as doors are opened – you must document the container number on the inside panel of the container in your photographs as much as possible (proving that this cargo was shipped in this container).
- During the destuffing process, try to photograph the full extent of the damage, i.e. was it 1 bag of rice that was wet or half the container.
- Ensure you take photographs before you return the container to the yard or depot.
- If you can digitally date and time stamp your photographs this would be even better!
- Submit your photographs to the shipping line immediately with your claim.
Pay attention that the photos should be clear and try to show the whole extent of the damage!
